    CLIMATE CHANGE CONSCIOUSNESS WEEK  2017

    In observance of the “Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week” on November 19-24 2017 pursuant to Proclamation No. 1667, s.2008, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) celebrated said event with the year’s theme on: “Linking Science, Policy and Practice for Climate Change and Disaster Resilience.”

    The annual celebration of the Climate Change Consciousness Week aims to create awareness on global warming and climate change by pursuing broad and intensive public information and education campaign to secure the collective cooperation of public and private sectors at all levels.

    In preparation to the annual activity, a Memorandum dated 10 October 2017 from the Undersecretary for Climate Change was issued to all DENR Regional and Bureau Directors, Heads of Attached Agencies and Service Directors requesting them support to prepare their activities for the year’s celebration.

    Likewise, the said directive reiterated the instruction of DENR Assistant Secretary Corazon Davis dated 09 October 2017 urging support activities for the whole month of November that is additionally declared as National Environmental Awareness Month, and National Clean Air Month.

    The week-long celebration started as early as November 18, 2018 with the commencement of the DENR Radio Program entitled “Ang Tinig Klima” on Radio Veritas (846 Khz AM band) which started at 8:00 a.m. This radio program is being aired every Saturday, 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. anchored by DENR Undersecretary Atty. Analiza Rebuelta-The, Ms. Rizza Mendoza and Ms. Shiela Dino of  Radio Veritas.

    The DENR, at the central, regional and local offices supported this national event with a multi-stakeholder activity entitled, “Sama-sama sa K5: Kilos sa Klima at Kalamidad Tungo sa Kaligtasan at Kaunlaran.”

    On November 18, 2017, various DENR offices participated in the week-long celebration including the conduct of an activity in a climate/ disaster-vulnerable community of their choice in their region or area of jurisdiction attended by respective local residents. In the DENR Central Office, the Climate Change Service, undertook a community engagement activity at Bagong Silang, Caloocan. The activity started with story telling on climate change for kids featuring the “Basura Monster” of Christine Bersola Babao. Resource Speakers from PAGASA, EMB and NSWMC were invited to lecture on Global Warming and Solid Waste Management.It was attended by around 50 kids and 80 adults, all residents of barangay Bagong Silang.

    DENR Undersecretary Analiza Teh delivered message for the community residents.

    Climate Change Consciousness Week 2018

    With the theme, “1.5OC Climate Challenge: Survive and Thrive Together,” the DENR’s celebration of the 2018 Climate Change Consciousness Week  kicked of with a modern dance from the students of Krus na Ligas High School. As part of the program, DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu delivered his message regarding climate change challenge and the immediate need to address it especially with the release of the latest 1.5°C Report by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

    The exhibit was officially opened with the ribbon-cutting ceremony led by DENR Secretary Cimatu along with the DENR Undersecretary for Climate Change and Mining Concerns, Atty. Analiza Rebuelta-Teh.

    The exhibit good practices of the winning barangays from the 2018 Metro Manila Search for Climate- and Disaster-Resilient Communities. The exhibit also highlighted various initiatives from agencies within and outside the DENR, to help build the climate and disaster resiliency of communities. The exhibit also presented some information regarding the 1.5°C IPCC Report and the Paris Agreement. The photo booth on “Climate Change Needs Behavior Change” displayed several choices of behavioural solutions on climate change, ranging from:  I will plant a tree; I will recycle; I will use mass transit; Switch to LED lights; I will support carpooling and ride-sharing; I will convert biodegradable wastes into soil fertilizer; I will reduce food waste; I will use water saving devices; I will refuse single-use plastics, among them.

    The program ended with some snacks which the participants enjoyed.
